Black Bear Encounters General information on how to handle an encounter with a Black Bear. Note that close-up encounter with Black bears, which we do have in Ontario, are handled differently than close-up encounters with Grizzly Bears. There are no Grizzly Bears in Ontario.
Many people think you should pretend to be "dead" if a bear does attack. That advice is not given when dealing with Black Bears. (It may work with Grizzlies.) Here is a clip from Glacier National Park in the USA that gives advice about encounters - and avoiding them - with both Black and Grizzly Bears: http://www.nps.gov/archive/glac/video/avbear.mov or click the "Bear Encounters (Black and Grizzly)" link.

Bear Encounters (Black and Grizzly) This clip is from Glacier National park in Montana, near the Canadian border. It gives advice on avoiding encounters with both Black Bears and Grizzly Bears and what to do if you end up too close to one. NOTE: We do not have Grizzly Bears in Ontario and the ways to handle a confrontation with a bear depends on the type of bear you are dealing with. So be careful to take away the information that relates to your area and the kinds of bear you may run into.

Hike Ontario An advocacy group promoting hiking and walking, with the ability to become invovled in the group and to become a certified hike leader (7 hour course). "Much of the emphasis is instructional but, as a certification program, a significant portion of the agenda is assessment and skills evaluation. The certification issued to the successful candidates is a sanctioned standard and will assist the candidates in leading club hikes, and finding work in Provincial Parks, Youth Camps, Scouts and Guides."
